Gaining God's Knowledge

Gaining God’s knowledge

2 Peter 1: 3-8 His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. By these He has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they will keep you from being useless or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Riverwood’s first article of the 2015 year covered the topic of the goodness God has for us. As you read further into the above passage from Peter, you see the next jewel of Godliness is knowledge. How do we get knowledge? What is its usefulness?

Let’s answer that first question, How do we get knowledge? I think there are many ways to get knowledge, but the best source is God’s Word. (I bet you knew I was going to say that.) It is the pure source of knowledge and truth. Another way includes bible studies such at those written by Henry Blackaby, Beth Moore, David Jeremiah, and Francis Chan just to name a few. These individuals take you deeper into the Word of God. We can get crumbs and frosting from devotionals, sermons, online sermons, and TV church, but the more Word of God in the source the more knowledge can be attained.

So if we have all this knowledge, what is its usefulness? As we store God’s goodness and His truth in our minds and hearts, we will have it to retrieve when tempted, or when facing difficult trials or decisions. When we are feeling low spiritually, we can pull this knowledge to the surface and rest in the knowledge of God. Or, we can bask in the beauty of His love for us. Or, we can praise Him with the worship of the Psalms. Have you ever been listening to a Christian song on the radio, and the words from it cause you to remember a Bible truth or verse? Or, have you been in conversation with someone, and you knew the right verse for the right time? That is its usefulness. It is you giving the Holy Spirit more of you to work with. That is awesome.
